Adam Hare, Class of 2010

Creighton University - Omaha, NE

Hometown: Overland Park, KS

Major: Biology

Creighton Students Union President

“The opportunities for research and hands-on lab experience are second to none at Creighton. Because of these opportunities, I have been able to acquire the skills with the technology that is needed to land high level internships and was able to get a summer research internship in a neuroscience lab at the University of Kansas Medical Center. The whole Creighton experience has been truly transformative for me, and it changed me as a person, not just as a scholar.”

Kate Butters

Franciscan University of Steubenville - Steubenville, OH

Hometown: Madison, VA

Major: Nursing

Kate Butters wanted two things out of a college education: an academic foundation that would help her succeed in this life, and a spiritual foundation that would help her succeed in the next. She found both at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Brandon Milonovich, Class of 2011

Co-presented with current teachers at a statewide conference

Hometown: Amsterdam, NY

Major: Math/Education 7-12

“I do a lot of after school programs with SCRATCH, the computer program language for kids developed at MIT. The great thing is it gives me the opportunity to take what I’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in education settings, and to get kids really engaged and to enjoy themselves learning, just the real way a kid should learn. I’ve had the opportunity to see math being taught in other schools and to really learn how math should be taught. Saint Rose trains educators in the student centered model which is really the way children should learn.”

Kimberleigh Costanzo

Iona College, New Rochelle, NY

Peter Heuer

Niagara University, NY

“I knew I wanted to attend Niagara as an Education major since I was a sophomore in High School. Niagara's Education program has garnered and maintained the highest respect both nationally and internationally. Academically, there was no questioning my decision. My only fear was that as a commuter, I would miss out on the “college experience”. Niagara, however, has provided me an environment in which I have become both academically and socially involved. Through campus activities and my experience working with NU’s Radio Station and Theatre Department I have begun new experiences that continue to grow every day.”

Adrienne Boykin

Fordham University - New York, NY

Hometown: Middletown, NJ

Adrienne Boykin wanted to go to college in New York City, and when she came to Fordham’s tree-lined campus at Rose Hill, she found it “comforting,” she says. “It brings students together.”

Nathan Thornton, Class of 2012

University of Portland – Portland, OR

Hometown: Boise, ID

Major: Nursing

“The University of Portland creates its own community on The Bluff. I compete in Cross Country and Track. Even though we are in a large school division for sports (NCAA Division I), we have the feel of a small school. You can go anywhere on campus and find someone to talk to or hang out with. Classes are small, and your professors want you to succeed. Nothing can be better than getting on a first name basis with a professor and being noticed in a class.”

Anna Kallqvist, Class of 2014

Mount Mercy University - Cedar Rapids, IA

Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden

Anna had no idea where she wanted to go after she had graduated high school. Several schools in the United States contacted Anna, but after being recruited for golf, she made a visit to Mount Mercy and decided it would be a good fit.

March 2011: Newsletter #1 from Dave Armstrong (Notre Dame College), 2010-11 National CCAA President

Hello National Catholic Colleges Admissions Association Members!

This is the first of what I hope to be many communications from me throughout my term as President of The National CCAA. I am Dave Armstrong from Notre Dame College in beautiful Cleveland, Ohio. I could not be more proud to be the current president of this excellent and very relevant organization. What makes The National CCAA such an excellent organization is you, our member institutions, who make it possible for the organization to be an advocate for all institutions that offer a Catholic values-based education for our global population. With member institutions that have enrollments of less than 1000 students to our large research-based institutions, we are all united in our faith and commitment to providing excellent academic opportunities to all.

What I would like to accomplish in my newsletters is simple. I want to give you notice of all the great membership benefits available to you through our organization and to begin the countdown to our next major event at this year’s NACAC conference in New Orleans. So…..

1. Catholic Colleges Reception at The NACAC Conference

It’s not too early to start thinking about fun in New Orleans at September’s NACAC conference. Our Annual Catholic Colleges Reception is scheduled for Friday, September 23, at the one and only New Orleans House of Blues in the French Quarter. For the first time in our Reception history we will have musical entertainment: a rockin’ retro 80’s band from New Orleans called Bag of Donuts.

The food, libations and fun will be first-rate. Special thanks to Board Member, Sherry Brouillette from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, LA, for making all of this happen. We are once again anticipating that our reception will be the premier event at NACAC and a wonderful opportunity for admission officers at our member schools to network with high school counselors.

Click here to read more about The Annual Catholic Colleges Reception and to see pictures from past events. We hope you will join us!

2. Reception Sponsorships

Speaking of the reception, there are plenty of opportunities for members to become Sponsors, which is a great way to promote your school to high school counselors and to help contribute to a wonderful networking event with the counselors. If you are interested in sponsoring, please contact me, your regional rep from our Board, or Joyce Masek, our Executive Director.

I am very proud to report that all Board Members present at our January board meeting in New Orleans committed for sponsorship for this event. That is 100% participation from your Board as we lead by example. Many, many thanks to all of our sponsors for helping us making this event possible!

3. Membership Renewals Are Coming!

A special thanks to our Past-Presidents Laura Oliveria (Salve Regina)and Jon Boeckenstedt (DePaul) for transforming The National CCAA into a modern organization that is economically viable in this fast-paced and technology-driven world. In the last several years, we have actually decreased our membership fees and increased member benefits. I am sure you can count on one hand how many organizations have accomplished that great feat in this challenging economy. Keep your eyes out for membership renewal contracts, which will be sent in April.

4. We still need your images and info!

If you haven’t sent images, student profiles, and news bits for our redesigned website, please click here for instructions on how to do so. To make our website stand out, we need the submissions of our members. It’s a great way to promote your school to prospective students, counselors and parents.

5. Mark this on your fall travel calendars:

The 4th Annual Catholic Colleges Puerto Rico Recruitment Program is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, to Thursday, October 20, 2011. We will again sponsor high school visits (including Catholic schools), a public fair on Wednesday evening, October 19, a bilingual financial aid presentation, and a counselor dinner. We will send out invitations shortly and hope someone from your admission staff will join us for this popular recruitment program.

Our 3rd Annual Catholic Colleges Central America Recruitment Program is scheduled to begin soon, and will take place from March 13-23, 2011. The group of member colleges and universities are looking forward to a busy two weeks of visiting high schools, giving admission/financial aid presentations, and meeting with counselors in the 6 countries they are visiting. We will post pictures and updates from the program on our website. Click here to see pictures and details from prior recruitment programs

6. Stay tuned for a future member benefit…

The National CCAA is currently testing an exciting branding opportunity involving our redesigned website, which will in turn direct more people to profiles of member institutions on our website. As we learn more through the testing, we are looking to extend this benefit directly to members to display your own institutional ads on our website and to ultimately create prospects. This is a very exciting venture for our members, so stay tuned!

7. Valuable Research For You

A tool that my admissions staff and I use frequently with families who want to know more about the value of a Catholic postsecondary education is the “Values That Matter” study performed by Hardwick Day and commissioned by The National CCAA. I am pleased to announce we are in negotiation to update this study by commissioning another survey to alumni from our member schools. We may be contacting you soon for assistance in gathering the alumni data needed to complete the survey process.

In addition, ACT is planning to continue the research they presented at last September’s NACAC conference, which sought to determine which variables describe the predictive variables of students who enroll at Catholic colleges and universities. Based on the helpful feedback of the members that were in the presentation’s audience, ACT plans to examine more variables and also insure that all member schools are included in the study.

We look forward to sharing the follow-up results of both these studies with you. You can find the original results of these two studies here.

8. Thanks and Congrats

I want to personally thank Joyce Masek for her tireless efforts to keep the organization going on a daily basis. Most organizations are only as good as their Directors and we are fortunate to have a passionate professional who makes this entity run in order to better serve its members.

Congratulations to Board Member, Marlene Mohs from St. Catherine University (MN), who was elected President-Elect of The National CCAA! Marlene will begin her duties at the Sept. 2011 NACAC.

Stay tuned for more presidential newsletters. In the meantime, good luck with your spring admission efforts. May we all have the best incoming classes ever!

Sincerely,

Dave Armstrong

April 2010 newsletter from Jon Boeckenstedt, (DePaul University), 2009-10 National CCAA President

My tenure on the presidential track at the National Catholic College Admission Association has been a period of great change for our organization, and yet, it's just the beginning as we move forward into 2011 and beyond.

In the past year, we've combined a great deal of work with a lot of fun, and I can honestly say that our organization is much stronger today for the work of our Board in the past two years. Click here to read more...
