Why did you choose Siena College?
I chose Siena College because it has everything I looked for in a school. Along with its academic rigor, Siena College has the small environment I need for academic attention. It also has a wide range of clubs that suit my interests perfectly and will help me participate in social activities. But my campus visit ultimately helped determine whether I would attend or not. I knew Siena was the place I wanted to spend the next four years of my life after that visit.
What are your hobbies?
Most of my free time is spent reading psychology and pre-med books, participating in science fairs, attending science cafes, and attending science research courses at the American Museum of Natural History and Lehman College. In fact, I won 1st place this year at the New York City Science and Engineering Fair in the category of biochemistry with my 2-year research project on BPA and its health risks. Aside from reading and science, I love running and going to the gym when I have time.
What is your favorite band or book?
I do not have favorites! I love all that I can learn from each equally. However, if I must choose one of the literary works I’ve read this year, it would be A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf. As a socially conscious female, I love reading feminist texts and educating myself about gender inequalities all over the spectrum and what action must be taken to resolve them. In her speech, Woolf spoke about how female writers need a room, space of their own, and money to create “genius” works.
What are your future plans?
Five years from now I plan on enrolling in medical school or working at a tech company and/or doing research to save money for medical school. I also plan on furthering my coding skills at Siena’s Women in Computer Science Club and commencing my new research idea on biotechnology. After having my career all set, I plan on giving back to my community and giving back to the science community of inner-city middle schools and high schools. As a Latina, Bronx girl from a low-socioeconomic status, I was able to fulfill my curiosity and do research on my 2-year project and even end up winning first place at a city-wide fair because of my school’s science program funder, Mr.Schwartz. He has helped so many students expand their science knowledge and fulfill their curiosities with his generous donations, and I will do the same as him one day.
