Interesting Facts Newman University was founded in 1933 by the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) in the middle of the Great Depression and dust bowl days in Wichita, Kansas, originally educating Sisters and lay women to be certified teachers.

St. Maria De Mattias, foundress of the Adorers, was intent on serving “the dear neighbor” and “filling the need” of Church and society.

Fr. Emil Kapaun, Servant of God, took his priestly vows on June 9, 1940, in St. John’s Chapel at Newman University under the same crucifix that hangs in the chapel today. The addition of a 12-foot by 4 ½-foot mural of Kapaun, painted by artist Wendy Lewis, was unveiled in August 2009 in St. John’s Chapel and still hangs on the wall today.
